Students on intensive Spanish courses in Barcelona should aim to eat out at least once a week. There are many restaurants to be found in the city, as well as a good deal of cafés offering food. If you pick and choose, the experience does not have to be an expensive one, and it is a great moment to practice what you have learnt during your Spanish language programs. For those people who wish to eat our for breakfast, the best bet is to go to one of the numerous new wave of coffee shops that have sprung up over the city in the last five years. Both local and international chains have moved through Spain, and the downtown area of the city is well sprinkled with them. Before starting the first morning classes of the many intensive Spanish courses in Barcelona, these coffee shops are the ideal place to meet up and grab a pick-me-up espresso or cappuccino, along with a pastry. For students of advanced Spanish courses in Spain who want the more authentic local ambience, the traditional bars and cafés normally offer croissants, doughnuts and other sweet pastries at this time of the morning. Don’t request a cappuccino though at this sort of establishment: the café con leche is the traditional offering in these places. Remember that breakfast is light in this part of the world, merely something to help the coffee go down. Between eleven and twelve, more people in Spain will have a mid morning bite to eat. For a cost per person of between ten and twelve euros, you will have a choice of starters, main course and desert. Bread, water and wine or a beer are included in the price, though you will be charged extra for coffee and seven percent sales tax needs to be added to the total. Typical Spanish dishes are normally served, and most students of intensive Spanish courses in Barcelona will know that on Thursday paella is widely served on menus at lunchtime throughout the city. Remember that lunch in Spain is served from two o’clock to three thirty or four. You will not find many places serving lunch before these times.
