Learning about Gaudi: An important part of language programs in Barcelona

Antoni Gaudi is one person who every participant of any intensive Spanish course in Barcelona associates with the city. Born in Reus in the province of Tarragon in 1852, when just 16 years old he moved to Barcelona to study architecture. He left his mark on the city, creating most of his more dazzling creations there.

One of the joys in coming to Barcelona to participate in an intensive Spanish course for business or pleasure is the opportunity it offers for getting to know better the architect and his work. One of the first leisure activities of a student on any of the language programs in Barcelona has to be a stroll down Paseo de Gracia. This is one of the town’s major commercial arteries, and Gaudi graced it with two very special buildings, the Casa Battló and the Casa Milà, the latter perhaps better known worldwide as the Pedrera.

The Casa Battló, to be found on the left hand side as you go up Paseo de Gracia was completed just under one hundred years ago. It is undoubtedly an architectural gem, representing the fight of St. George with the dragon. Students on language programs in Barcelona can visit this house which is privately owned. Gaudi took special care in designing many of the interior decorations and furniture. As well as offering the possibility of a visit, there are many function rooms available for hire.

About one kilometre further up Paseo de Gracia, on the right hand side is Casa Milà, also know as the Pedrera or “stone quarry” in English. The whole house is a museum which ranks as the second most visited in Barcelona after Gaudi’s other masterpiece, the Temple of the Sacred Heart. During the month of July, participants of language programs in Barcelona can take advantage of a rare treat: visiting the museum on a Friday or Saturday night, and enjoying a musical concert afterwards.

Another landmark design is the Parc Güell, a highly original housing project which was to prove unsuccessful and was brought to an end by the start of the First World War. This park has the famous sinuous and snake like bench overlooking the city, as well as the equally well know salamander fountain. After working hard all week on their respective Spanish language programs in Barcelona, this is a great place for students to meet up on a Sunday afternoon.

Language programs in Barcelona

If your language programs in Barcelona do not leave you with much respite after lessons, and you can only spare time to visit one monument or museum, then you should choose the Sagrada Familia, or Temple of the Sacred Heart. Gaudi started work on this masterpiece in 1883, the year of his thirty first birthday. He would devote the rest of his life to it up until his death in 1926.

This famously unfinished church is still under construction and is Barcelona’s number one tourist attraction, receiving over two million visitors each year. Participants of intensive Spanish language programs who visit the temple can climb up the bell towers and enjoy fantastic views of the city. Though always packed with visitors, the climb up these towers is particularly rewarding as you can admire close up many of the unique and inspiring decorative features the architect incorporated into his design.
