The coast is accessible by bus, car and train, and a day outing to the sea is a great way of taking a break from the language programs in Barcelona.

Lying to the north of Barcelona, and beginning forty kilometres from the city limits is the Costa Brava. This part of the coast consists of steep cliffs and small bays with sandy beaches, and stretches up to the frontier with France. For those students who chose Spanish language courses in Spain so as to be able to take advantage of the bustling night life, then cities such as Roses, Blanes or Lloret de Mar will not disappoint. Founded as a trading post (its name comes from the Greek word emporium) about six centuries before the birth of Christ, it has distinct Greek and Roman city areas. Situated just by the sea, the nearby beaches are just as worthy of a visit, and the day’s trip can be finished off with dinner at L’Escala, a fishing town renowned for the quality of its anchovies.

The coastal area lying to the south of Barcelona is called the Costa Daurada. In contrast to the Costa Brava, students of Spanish language courses in Spain will find long stretches of beautiful golden sandy beaches. This part of the coast attracts tourists from Northern Europe in droves, especially since the Port Aventura theme and water park opened its doors in the nineties. It is well worth spending two full days at the park, staying overnight close by at Salou. The younger students studying intensive Spanish in Barcelona will enjoy the nightlife to be found in this tourist resort.

Students of Spanish language courses in Spain who are interested in history will enjoy at visit to Tarragona, a former provincial capital in Roman times. Under the name of Tarraco, it was one of the important cities of the Roman Empire, and was visited several times by both Julius Caesar and the Emperor Augustus. The Roman presence survives to this day in the shape of several monuments, including the amphitheatre, the forum or the aqueduct located on the outskirts of the city.
